We are now part way through the busy ‘half term’ period for the UK, France and the majority of Europe and don’t we know it in La Rosiere. The mood has definitely changed and the streets have a lively atmosphere during the day. While the resort has become noticeably busier it’s not in a ‘I can’t move’ kind of way, so don’t be too put off. The bars and restaurants are relatively packed at lunchtimes but the most obvious places to be affected by the high influx of people are the chair lifts.

I’ve been a bit rubbish on the old blog front, mainly because I haven’t been skiing. The week before last was ridiculously cold; I’d never felt temperatures like it. There were big signs at the bottom of chair lifts warning that the temperature at the top was a death defying minus 25 degrees. When presented with such information, what do you do? Turn around and go home? Or wonder what minus 25 degrees feels like? So on the lift we went and regretted it after about 0.7 seconds.

I was away on business again last week, scheduled to return to Munich airport at 4pm, early enough to miss the worst of the rush hour. But my plane was delayed, and the minibus transfer was caught first in the Munich rush hour, then in the heavy traffic heading towards Austrian ski resorts for the weekend. There’s a lesson there. If you plan to spend a long weekend skiing in Austria and flying into Munich, arriving on Thursday makes for a much more relaxed transfer.

Cinnamon hearts, warm fuzzy feelings and the colour red, from time immemorial that's Valentine's Day. Besides the chocolate the best part of this day is it's a day to acknowledge love.

Val d'Isere have some great fine dining experiences on and off the slopes. The snow is so amazing this year, add to that the tempting Michelin star cuisine on offer and you could be in seventh heaven! So even if you don't ski you could spend your time choosing the best places to eat or attending a cooking class at one of the best restaurants in town, or sample the delights at a wine tasting evening.

They’ve arrived.

I walked out of the apartment this morning and scene of French chaos greets me.  Three cars with their bonnets open and their owners slipping about on the ice, juggling with jump leads.  Another car owner faffing about with bits of cardboard, trying to drive directly up a sheet ice slope without snow tyres.  Another guy taking relentless run ups trying to drive out of said iced up driveway, making it even more slippery in the process.  Torville and Dean could skate on our driveway at the moment.

During my first two seasons in Austria my skiing improved beyond recognition. When the snow was perfect and the pitch of the slope just right, I almost felt as if I was in control and actually knew what I was doing. However, the next day I’d ski a steeper black run in icy conditions and all my poise and balance would be out of the window. It was back to survival mode. There is a vicious circle that affects many skiers. When conditions are more difficult we tend to lean back, which gives us less control, and it all goes to pot. I’m sure you’ve been there as well.

I had a great plan for blogs this week. First I was going to write about rolling back into life as a full-time instructor for the first time in years. Then, best of all, transcribe my trip to Mt Baker to race in the Banked Slalom, one of the oldest still-running snowboard competitions. How does that saying go? The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray?

Having missed the mountains last weekend due to a business trip to New York, I was looking forward to skiing with friends in Fieberbrunn on Saturday. My car, however, had other ideas.

Back in 2002, I was drawn to being a ski bum after working long days in London. An apartment in Brides-les-Bains near Méribel was offered to me so I flew to Geneva, then took four poorly-connected slow trains, requiring stair climbs at each interchange. The taxi ride from the station involved the driver asking “Où travaillez-vous?” (“Where do you work?”), which I thought had something to do with travel. I smiled and shrugged and said “No parlez” based on one of my mum’s Paul Young album titles.

16th February 2012

The big story of the past week has been a second week of very low temperatures in Europe, a period which is just coming to an end with warmer temperatures coming in off the Atlantic to the West.  The cold weather has meant it has been too cold for much snow to fall anywhere.
