28th December 2011

After the snow deluge that blanketed Europe for much of December up to Christmas, the snowfall has eased to a more regular rate and conditions have stabilised. That is particularly good news in the French and parts of the Swiss Alps where the huge snowfalls led to travel problems and piste closures while lifts were dug out and runs made avalanche safe. However the off-piste avalanche risk remains high at many resorts in Europe.

Wind is one force of nature that seems to be taking over Whistler/Blackcomb lately, with its sidekick temperature. It's just moving air but it is moving our snow all over the place. Some places have names for the gusts that frequently visit but in Whistler there are two common winds and we just call them North and South.

It’s a funny thing being out here in the Alps at Christmas. Christmas isn’t generally celebrated by a day of complete shutdown like it is in the UK. The French and Swiss normally have a big family meal on Christmas Eve and then spend their Christmas Day either working or skiing. Both Mrs Burrows and I were working on Christmas day so it passed as a bit of a non-event.

On Christmas Eve it drizzled, which put paid to our plans for cross-country skiing. Visibility higher up was limited, but when the clouds broke I could see that the rain was falling as snow above 1,000 metres.

We MadDogSki desk-jockeys do love reading the blogs as they come in, and here's a particularly special moment, captured and sent in by Jesse Howe in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"Thought you would enjoy these pics I snapped moments ago while sitting in my hot tub!

Sent from paradise - pardon the brevity"

Having spent the last few months worrying loudly about the lack of snow, many Austrians now feel a bit sheepish as it has dumped continuously for the last few days and looks set to continue until the sun comes out on Christmas day. It could almost have been planned by the tourist board. After clearing our drive for the fourth time in 24 hours I headed for the resort of Hoch Kössen, a twenty minute drive from St Johann near the German border.
