Most people think living in Whistler is a 24/7 party. The truth is there can be spells where nothing is going on. Weeks of boredom. Being one of the most expensive places to live it's usually because everyone is broke. For instance there is only one festival in Whistler during the winter however; when it rains it pours.

The best thing about my job with Snow School is I never know what I will be doing when I show up to work. I may be training with the legends of the sport or teaching someone famous or doing a photo shoot. Last night I got the call to be a model for a day.

April first started out like every morning in the last two weeks. Eleven cm's of fresh on the snow report with more falling outside. Certainly there will be more cm's by the time I get to the hill.

Cinnamon hearts, warm fuzzy feelings and the colour red, from time immemorial that's Valentine's Day. Besides the chocolate the best part of this day is it's a day to acknowledge love.

I had a great plan for blogs this week. First I was going to write about rolling back into life as a full-time instructor for the first time in years. Then, best of all, transcribe my trip to Mt Baker to race in the Banked Slalom, one of the oldest still-running snowboard competitions. How does that saying go? The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray?

It happened on Sunday, the cold snap that comes at least once during the winter. Early in the week I check the weather network website (I've learned to not rely on the Whistler/Blackcomb site as the snow report for the last week has been a straight up lie, calling for 10-15cms every night) and there it was: minus 17 celsius, on its way. Now that is hardly a chilly winter day in some towns, however Whistler humidity is not to be underestimated. The damp air gets right to your core and minus 17 feels like minus 30.

Canada’s heritage draws on a few different cultures. It’s plain to see the most predominate is English. You can’t swing a tea bag without hitting four citizens that are first, seasond or third generation Brits. It was also the English who were among the first Europians to see the mountains, in what is now the Whistler Valley, and name them.

The end of December was a bit of a drought in Whistler, but on my birthday morning, December, 24th ten cms fell over night and the snow has been falling ever since. There is a hard freeze melt layer still lurking below the dry powder; however our birthday posse of three found first tracks in Whistler side country and it was all I could ask for. Nothing like aiming your board or boards at whatever you want at high speeds without the jarring of an unexpected bump.

Wind is one force of nature that seems to be taking over Whistler/Blackcomb lately, with its sidekick temperature. It's just moving air but it is moving our snow all over the place. Some places have names for the gusts that frequently visit but in Whistler there are two common winds and we just call them North and South.
