Half term in La Rosiere

Posted by EmmaWhittaker 22nd February 2012

We are now part way through the busy ‘half term’ period for the UK, France and the majority of Europe and don’t we know it in La Rosiere. The mood has definitely changed and the streets have a lively atmosphere during the day. While the resort has become noticeably busier it’s not in a ‘I can’t move’ kind of way, so don’t be too put off. The bars and restaurants are relatively packed at lunchtimes but the most obvious places to be affected by the high influx of people are the chair lifts.

Emma Whittaker skiingYesterday, for the first time this season I had to queue, yes queue, for more than 30 seconds to get on a chair lift. After skiing down Marmottes, I was faced with a 10 minute wait to get on the lift back up. This came as a bit of a shock. The pistes are also fairly busy, although still not in comparison to the other major resorts. You now have to check there is no-one about to cut you up as you continue down the piste, something that should probably be done regardless. It is slightly disconcerting when there are skis close behind you but, so far, there haven’t been any major collisions on my part. My friends on the other hand… well that’s another story!

As for the après ski, there are plenty of things going on in the next week or so for the half term holidays. One of the highlights is the weekly torchlight decent and synchronised skiing show on Monday evenings, with an Asterix and Obelisk theme. It’s a very family orientated event, however, you can still get a good glass of vin chaud whilst you’re watching. The start time alters every week so check in the tourist information office in town before you go.

About the author

Emma is spending her first season working as a chalet host in La Rosiere and loving every minute of it. After completing a degree in the UK in the summer of 2011 a year out seemed like the way forward and the opportunity to work a season was a long awaited dream which just couldn’t be ignored anymore. The slopes in La Rosiere, and La Thuile just over an hour’s ski away, are awesome and she gets out on the slopes as much as possible to take advantage of the quiet slopes and deep powder – on and off piste.
