I met some chicks in a bar...

I was away on business again last week, scheduled to return to Munich airport at 4pm, early enough to miss the worst of the rush hour. But my plane was delayed, and the minibus transfer was caught first in the Munich rush hour, then in the heavy traffic heading towards Austrian ski resorts for the weekend. There’s a lesson there. If you plan to spend a long weekend skiing in Austria and flying into Munich, arriving on Thursday makes for a much more relaxed transfer.
The good news was that it had snowed some more, and Saturday promised blue skies and sunshine. I set off on the early train to Kitzbühel planning to ski to ten resorts in the Kitzbühel and Ski Welt areas, a variation on the theme of my blog in January 2011. Condition were great, lift queues were minimal, and I arrived at the end of the adventure in the village of Going before 3pm.
Along the way I’d shared an 8 seat lift with a group who were discussing which piste was their favorite. After a pause (during which I forgot what the thread of the conversation had been), a lady turned to neighbor and said “You know, I think my favorite is 69”. To their credit, none of the blokes on the lift even giggled. After I’d completed the route, I skied around the Going area for another hour and a half, rewarding myself with a beer at a mountain top bar where I met a group of girls in fancy dress for the Fasching, a pre-Lent carnival. For the record, I took 37 lifts, covered 118 km and skied 14,400 vertical meters.

My first skiing experience was in Glenshee, which I enjoyed so much that I quit for 15 years - until friends dragged me to Meribel. Skiing on the continent was somewhat different to Scotland, and I’ve been catching up ever since. I moved to St Johann in Tirol in 2009 - with Kitzbühel, the SkiWelt, and several smaller resorts just a short drive away. I’m a computer technology analyst by day, which I can luckily do anywhere as long as I’m on-line
