Mayrhofen — On the piste
The Mayrhofen ski area is divided into two. On one side of the valley you'll find the main Penken area. This can be accessed from the Penkenbahn gondola directly out of Mayrhofen town centre or from the Horbergbahn nearer to Ramsau. On the other side of the valley you'll find the Ahorn; a scenic and sunny ski sector with runs all the way down to the village and which also happens to be a gem on powder days.
Pistes for all levels
Mayrhofen has something to offer all levels of skier and is also a popular snowboarding destination due to the unusually low number of flat sections. It is also home to the infamous Vans Penken Park – great for watching skiers and snowboarders performing some mind-boggling tricks, just don't stand on the landing!
Most recreational skiers will enjoy the Ahorn with plenty of gentle cruising to be found, good tree runs and beautiful views. Penken offers beginner, intermediate and advanced areas. Beginners are well catered for but it is worth noting that there are no free lifts such as those often found in other Austrian resorts.
Lift pass
Although the ski areas of Mayrhofen and Ahorn offer plenty of terrain for beginners and experts a like, it is possible to buy a Zillertal Super Ski Pass that offers skiing at every resort in the Ziller Valley. That means on one ticket you have access to over 600kms of pistes. Transferring from resort to resort requires a short ride on the Zillertalbahn, or the bus to get down to Hintertux, so it is best to chose your destination for the day rather than try to squeeze a few resorts into one day.
