Mayrhofen — Things to do
There's plenty do in and around Mayrhofen, on and off the piste. As we mentioned before the extent of terrain in Mayrhofen and the Ziller Valley is incredible – way more than you'll have time to explore in one trip.
Hintertux Glacier
If you fancy heading out of town and getting a taste of some new slopes a trip to the Hintertux Glacier is a great experience. It can be cold in mid-winter so check the webcams and resort info before you go. Or if you fancy a top-to-bottom run, 1500m of descent, then head to Kaltenbach and ski your way down the entire mountain. It's really quite amazing to be stood at the top, looking down on the valley that 30 minutes later you will soon be standing in.
Local attractions
If you fancy a rest from skiing there's plenty to keep you occupied. Fancy visiting a timber factory? As you travel north to Fuegen the Binderholz timber factory is impossible to miss. As industrial as it looks the plant is actually a model of sustainable energy production and uses all the leftover wood to power the production processes. The factory offers guided tours but if a timber factory is not what you're after consider a trip to Sennerei Zillertal to see local dairy produce being made? Or take day of R&R at the Erlebnisbad to enjoy some outdoor swimming. The SportHotel Strass has a full spa and a small pool.
Innsbruck city trip
Innsbruck is a charming city and is actually the capital of the federal state of Tyrol. It's name corresponds to the Inn valley in which it resides. The city offers plenty of attractions from the Zaha Hadid designed ski jump (Bergiselschanze), to the Golden Roof (yes it's made of gold). The old town is bustling with traditional old European charm. There's also full sized swimming pools and spas in the city and plenty of bars, pubs and restaurants. If you don't have a car it's a straightforward journey taking the Zillertalbahn to Jenbach and then changing to take a 30 minute train from Jenbach to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof.
Events
The biggest event in the UK ski and snowboarders' calendar has got to be Snowbombing - winner of the 'Best Overseas Festival' award at the UK 2010 Festival Awards it is a hedonistic week of the finest DJs and musicians playing in the usual resort venues and some unique locations.
