Schladming — Austria

Compare this resort

Situated in the Enns Valley on the edge of Styria, Schladming (Shlad-ming) has a thriving local community and offers more than just skiing with its wealth of history and old-town feel. Its proximity to Salzburg airport means that it's easy to get to for a weekend trip and, once there, the pedestrianised main street (Hauptplatz) and the town's centrally located facilities make it easy to get around. There are buses and trains within easy walking distance to the centre.

When you add to the convenience and charm with truly world-class skiing and the reliability afforded by the high altitude skiing of the impressive Dachstein glacier, it is hard to imagine anyone failing to be impressed. The wider Ski Amade opens up 860km of piste in 30 villages and you could feasibly return year after year without getting bored. The apres ski is the weak point of Schladming, although many visitors to this traditional and low-key resort will tell you that this only enhances its charm.

  1. Walking across the pisted walk up on Dachstein Glacier really gives you an idea of the scale of it.
  2. Hit the slopes... but this time on a toboggan. The run at Hochwurzen  is over 7km long.
  3. Wind down with a massage.
  4. For those who like to live dangerously, try paragliding over the mountain tops.
  5. If you visit Salzburg, the Sound of Music tour is an absolute must!

9 days to go...

Posted by AlanHayes on 29th March 2009

With the season closing in Schladming in just 9 days we have had a big rush of people trying to squeeze in a second weeks skiing or just a weekend away, we are now manic with at least one or two airport transfers every day and loads of late bookings we have found accommodation for- between this, the kids and the property management my ski time has really suffered!

Easter day

Posted by AlanHayes on 24th March 2009

Now with three days of constant snow the conditions are brilliant, Easter morning and again Easter Monday we hit the slopes early on the first bus to get some fresh tracks before the crowds arrived.  Up to 11 the slopes were deserted with 15 cm of fresh powder and great skiing on and off piste.  By 11 the temperature was up to plus two and the crowds gathering- so back home for a swim!

I emptied our hot tub to mark the coming of spring only to find 5cm of snow in the garden this morning- I should have left it another week!
