St Anton — Austria
St Anton has been highly-regarded as a ski destination since the 1920’s and found fame as the home town of ski pioneer Hannes Schneider. This little gem in Western Austria is quite simply the home of skiing for many people, and nowadays it ranks highly as a mecca for party animals. The resort is not saturated by Brits, as is the case in a lot of French resorts, and has a cosmopolitan feel to it with plenty of visitors from all over Europe and North America.
The Arlberg ski area offers 270km of pistes ranging from 1305m up to 2811m, with extensive off-piste routes available too. December and January are the coldest months with deep blue skies and strong winter sun amongst days of snowfall. February and March, whilst warmer, continue to provide great snow conditions, as the north-facing slopes keep their base intact for the season. Sunnier south-facing slopes are kept in perfect shape by snowmaking.
This quick guide might help you to navigate around the town and main landmarks and areas.
- Head for a sauna or hot tub in the Well.com centre to relax your muscles.
- Hit some of the great walking trails around the Arlberg.
- Pop into the skiing museum and learn about the history of St Anton and skiing.
- Go down the slopes on your backside – tobogganing that is.
- Take a ride on a horse and carriage, admiring the town and feeling like royalty.

Last update from St Anton:
The snow is fast turning from slushy moguls to muddy grass, the sun seems to be shining rather a lot, and this is the last report from St Anton for season 2010. I thought I would get in to the end of season spirit and ask a kangaroo court of winter only residents for their thoughts on the bests of the season. Here goes:
Best Skier: Nathan Reed. Its official.
