Whistler — On the piste

Whistler Blackcomb is a massive resort that gets over 10 metres of snow a year. Whistler opened in 1966 and throughout the 1990s it expanded massively and was competing with Blackcomb for business. The resorts have since joined forces to create an area that will leave everyone spoilt for choice.

Every morning diehard powder hounds line up alongside visitors from around the world for the first shot at fresh turns. The introduction of the Symphony Express has opened up an extra 1000 acres of terrain. And we hear there are more plans for expansion in the pipeline.

Snowfalls in excess of 10m a year

Whistler Blackcomb is famous for its abundance of snow. The average winter snowfall in at the ski resort is a cracking 10m plus! Add to that the awesome natural features and the best terrain parks in the world and you can see why skiers and snowboarders love this ski resort.

Pistes for beginners, intermediates and experts

Beginners are well catered for around the mid-station of the Whistler gondola and the Blackcomb daylodge. Intermediates will struggle to exhaust the area. And experts will be spoilt for choice. To give an example, Whistler offers a larger area of terrain than the Espace Killy in France.

It is important to remember that the piste coding system differs from Europe. Green circles represent the easiest runs. Blue squares represent an intermediate level. Black and double black diamonds represent advanced areas.

Changes to the terrain parks

Changes are being made to the Terrain Parks for 2010/11 season. Notably crews are widening and straightening the superpipe's fall-line for better riding and to accommodate the 22-foot Global Pipe Cutter.
