Avoriaz 1800 — Resort services
Avoriaz has all of the basics that you would expect of a ski station but suffers to an extent for being a recent purpose-built project. There is no problem for example when it comes to eating and drinking, cashpoints and emergency medical attention. For more complicated services or a better choice you may need to head down to the sister resort of Morzine which is more of a conventional town. Beyond Morzine the city of Thonon Les Bains is just 30 minutes away on the edge of Lake Geneva.
Cashpoints and banks
The main street through the middle of Avoriaz has many banks and cashpoints. It is possible to ski to the bank due to it being a car free resort. Some of the bars have cash dispensers too but beware the high service charges for using such machines. They can charge up to 4 or 5 euros for the convenience. Cards are accepted almost everywhere so there is always a way of getting you to pay!
Internet access
Most of the big accommodation providers offer free internet access as part of their prices now but of you are unsure just check the website of your chosen apartment complex. Otherwise there are a handful of bars in the main street that will offer free access in return for you buying a drink. The tourist office in the resort centre also has a wifi hot spot and internet terminals that can be used at a cost of 2 euros for 10 minutes.
Medical facilities
Avoriaz has one main medical centre near the bottom end of the resort but it is a very well equipped one. You will also find a physiotherapist there. Due to the fact that the road down to Morzine is over 19km long any serious injuries tend to be a job for a helicopter evacuation. The nearest hospital is in Thonon, about 30 minutes beyond Morzine.
Supermarkets
There are three supermarkets dotted around Avoriaz so you are never too far away. Sherpa have a branch at both ends of the resort – one in the Falaise district that is open 8am until 8pm every day and a second branch in the centre of the resort towards the bottom end of the main street. This is also open non-stop in winter from 8am until 8pm. Carrefour is the most central supermarket but its opening hours are a bit erratic – normally 7.30am until 7.30pm but with occasional closures at lunch time!
