La Clusaz — France
La Clusaz has been attracting skiers since the early 1900’s and nowadays is more popular than ever as people flock here for spectacular scenery, reliable skiing on five well-connected mountains, and plenty to see and do off the slopes. At just one hour from Geneva la Clusaz (La clue-sa) is also rapidly becoming a popular short break destination, and the resort has kept pace with demand through constant improvements of its infrastructure. The Beauregard gondola that opened in 2003 is the most significant of these, improving uplift capacity to 53,000 people per hour.
The village itself is centered around a traditional church and market square, and has plenty of excellent bars and restaurants as well as three streets lined with shops. Non-skiers will find more to do here than in many other resorts and parents will find it easier to amuse younger visitors with an excellent aqua park in resort. A day trip to the nearby lakeside town of Annecy is another good option.
- Take an aerial view with a tandem paraglide.
- Swimming in the outdoor pools with views overlooking La Clusaz and the Cret du Merle Piste.
- Go skiing behind horses - otherwise known as ski jouring.
- Cross-country skiing over some of the 70km of pistes on the Beauregard and Confins plateaus.
- Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains.

Returning to life as a ski bum
Posted by WendyHolland on 7th February 2012
Back in 2002, I was drawn to being a ski bum after working long days in London. An apartment in Brides-les-Bains near Méribel was offered to me so I flew to Geneva, then took four poorly-connected slow trains, requiring stair climbs at each interchange. The taxi ride from the station involved the driver asking “Où travaillez-vous?” (“Where do you work?”), which I thought had something to do with travel. I smiled and shrugged and said “No parlez” based on one of my mum’s Paul Young album titles.
