Les Gets — Families
Unlike many resorts Les Gets doesn’t just cope well with families, it is all about families! The beginner ski areas have been designed intelligently with children in mind and a read through the weekly events programme will quickly show that the town does everything that it can to make parent's lives easier by providing enough regular entertainment for younger visitors. Families are particularly attracted to Les Gets by this well-planned provision of on- and off-snow facilities combined with the easy access. At just an hour from Geneva airport or eight hours drive from Calais there is less time for children to get bored en route!
Ski schools
Ski Plus specialises in group lessons for children and teenagers whilst ESF, the local French ski school, has the highest number of instructors and therefore most capacity in high season. The British Alpine Ski School offer children's group lessons and have a maximum group size of six for beginners, allowing them to have more personal attention. Alpine Learning Curves have a great small team of instructors and they offer more flexibility in the timings of their workshops and group lessons. Very young beginners are well catered for by Ile des Enfants.
Childcare
Childcare services in Les Gets range from British nanny agencies such as Jack Frosts, who can look after children in the comfort of the chalet, to a local crèche and a ski school option that takes children as young as three. The Ile des Enfants has a good reputation locally and its prices are reasonable too. The easiest way of having childcare organised for you maybe to book with one of the many specialist family tour operators in resort as their prices generally include childcare. Ski Famille and Esprit both have a strong presence in Les Gets.
Restaurants for families
On the mountain the best restaurants for children are often those that are near the main lift station, and Les Gets is no different. The Chavannes plateau has a whole host of places with simple menus and plenty of seating. For children who can ski a bit further there are a few hidden gems such as Les Blanchots near Nyon (good value for money but no indoor seating) and La Rosettaz where portions are so big you can save money by splitting a plate of food between two or three people! In the evening La Case K2 offers simple food and a relaxed ambience – perfect for children, and La R’Mize has a good children's set menu.
Activities for families
It is always worth checking the cinema listings in Les Gets as they regularly show afternoon matinees of international films in English – a good alternative to skiing on a cold and wet day! No trip to Les Gets would be complete for children without a visit to the ice rink in the centre of town and prices are very reasonable. If visiting Les Gets over the festive season the trip to see Santa in his forest cabin is not to be missed! Also be sure to check the weekly events programme at the tourist office as there are different events aimed at families and children every week of the season.
