Morzine — Resort services
The tourist office of Morzine is the first stop for a directory of all services on offer but in general visitors are pleasantly surprised by what is available. The fact that it is a working town rather than a ski station means that everyday services such as petrol stations, banks and medical facilities are not too much of a struggle. Tourist-orientated shops sit comfortably alongside others that provide essential if somewhat less exciting services to a year-round population.
In-resort transport is good during the day thanks to the bus service but the small number of taxi firms is one of the biggest failings of Morzine. On a big night out it is essential to book in advance or accept the long walk home!
Cashpoints
Credit Agricole and Bank Populaire by the tourist office both have cashpoints in their foyer which are accessible until 10pm. Alternatively La Poste and Credit Mutuel on Route de la Plagne have 24-hour cashpoints. Try to avoid cash dispensers that have appeared in some bars as they tend to have a high charge for usage. Avoriaz has many cashpoints and these may be just as convenient if you are skiing through the main street during the day.
Internet
Internet access is getting easier every year in Morzine and your accommodation may well have wifi included. If not there are a couple of internet cafes (Monty’s being a particularly good one on the Rue du Bourg) and plenty of bars and cafes with free wifi access. The Rhodos bar is open all day and will give you a code for internet access when you buy a drink. The tourist office is also now a wifi hotspot.
Medical facilities
There are two medical centers in Morzine and both are well equipped with their own x-ray equipment. Opening hours can be slightly odd and Sundays are a nightmare (not the day to get injured or fall ill)! In nearby Montriond the surgery of Dr Masson has much better opening hours and fewer queues, and people always speak of the high level of service they receive there. The nearest hospital is 30 minutes away in Thonon.
Supermarkets
Morzine has two main supermarkets and a selection of convenience stores. ED is located on the Route de la Plagne, just beyond the Super Morzine lift and is open until 7.30pm. Carrefour Market is in the old town, behind the town hall, and is open until 8pm. Both tend to open Sundays in high season but be sure to check. Try to avoid shopping at lunchtime when a lot of places close for the usual 2-hour break!
Getting around resort
The free bus service is undoubtedly the best way to move around resort and this links all the main lifts to the center of town. Road access and parking is becoming increasingly difficult as the resort presses on with plans to pedestrianise the town centre. A road train operates all day every day to link the cablecars on both sides of the town and this is also free of charge.
