Val Thorens — France
At the top of the Trois Vallees ski area Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Western Europe and a tribute to the developers of the 1960’s. Its popularity goes from strength to strength as a holiday here offers visitors the convenience and reliability that comes with staying at altitude, and at the same time easy access to the more attractive slopes and villages at lower levels. If it has a downside it would be that with altitude comes unpredictable weather, and on a bad weather day Val Thorens is a bleak place to be.
A lot of money has been spent on making the resort more desirable in recent years. Amenities in the resort have expanded to be friendlier to the non-skier and to provide a much better food and drink scene. The exhilarating four mile toboggan run and the sports centre provide interesting, non-skiing diversions but make no mistake; Val Thorens is a purpose built, skiers resort.
