Cervinia — Italy
This old climbing village has evolved with the growth of winter sports and the attractive old centre is now surrounded by nondescript apartment blocks. Its location at the head of the Aosta valley makes it easily accessible from Turin and Milan, and over the years Cervinia has been used by many as a way to access Zermatt’s slopes on a budget. The resort has a lot of advantages in its own right though, particularly when it comes to learning to ski or building confidence.
Off the slopes, whilst the bar and restaurant scene are good, there’s a serious lack of non-skiing activities. If you have non-skiers in your party, Zermatt is a better option. However, for skiers there are plenty of cheap package deals available to Cervinia and the snow record is excellent. As of summer 2009 Cervinia has added to Zermatt’s summer ski terrain so its popularity is likely to increase further still.

- Visiting the viewing terrace of Piccolo Cervino for a breathtaking 360° panorama of Monte Cervino, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc.
- Visiting the ice caves at the Piccolo Cervino.
- Skiing the 11km Ventina run top to bottom.

We are huge fans of Cervinia. It's all wide sunny motorway pistes, gorgeous and great value family-run mountain restaurants (Mad Dog's Hannah's belly still rumbles at the memory of a particularly exquisite minestrone soup!), and a rustic, friendly village.
Great for kids, great for groups (lots of big pizzarias and the like), and great for anyone on a budget. Particularly for £309 with flights and transfers, and with half price lift passes on offer!
