Verbier — Planning your trip
Many UK airlines fly into Geneva (Switzerland), which is 170km from Verbier and has a transfer time of around 2 hours in a car or 3 to 3.5 hours on a train. The other major Swiss airport, Zurich, and the smaller Basel airport are other options. There is also the much closer local airport of Sion just 55km away (an hour by road) and the new flights to here operated by Snowjet for the 09/10 winter season will make flying a much more desirable option. Once at the airport there are various options but most people opt to either hire a car or take the train to Martigny station (30 minutes away) and then a public bus or private transfer to resort. A nice alternative in the day time is to take a local train to Le Chable and then access Verbier directly from there by cable car.
If you are considering taking the train all the way from home the best route is to catch the French TGV service to Geneva and then change at the airport for a Swiss service along the Rhone Valley. The train from London to Geneva takes around 9 hours. Self-driving is another option but the journey time is quite long at around 11 hours from Calais. Most of the journey is on motorways but don’t forget that you'll need a motorway pass (vignette) to drive through Switzerland. You can buy these at all borders for 40CHF.
