Wengen — Where to stay

It may be hard to believe when you see the idyllic chocolate-box village of Wengen but the resort was actually one of the first ever purpose-built ski resorts. Over 30 hotels sprung up in the 1880’s after the arrival of the train and hotels still dominate the accommodation scene today. New ones have been built and old ones renovated, but always in a sympathetic way to retain the charm of the resort. Most of the hotel accommodation is based in the main village above the railway station and as is normally the case in Switzerland you can expect excellent customer service and higher standards than elsewhere in Europe.
 
There is little by way of ski in, ski out accommodation in Wengen and it is important to research the location of your accommodation before booking it. For example, Beausite Park is one of the best hotels but its location is not great. The Silberhorn is a comfortable and central ‘all-rounder’ whilst those searching for peace and quiet will enjoy the Wengener Hof. Don’t expect the same level of alpine charm as elsewhere though. If you like the ‘Brits Abroad’ approaches to holidays try the Falken. If hotels are not for you Wengen does also have a variety of other accommodation from apartments to a youth hostel. Self-catered apartments and chalets are available in through the tourist office and the residence of the Hotel Bernerhof offers the nice compromise of apartments with access to the hotel leisure facilities.
